07/04/19 - Our Spring Concert, conducted by Benedict Collins Rice, was a great success. Lovely to be joined by our younger counterparts at the LTO for a rousing rendition of the Dambusters March!

19/03/19 - Preparations are well underway for our Spring Concert in Tonbridge on 7th April. Benedict Collins Rice will conduct works by Prokofiev, Brahms and Haydn. See the Events page for full details.

11/03/19 - Great to see so many Lydian players, parents and committee members contributing to last night's charity concert at Tonbridge School. The concert, organised and conducted by Lydian player Alex Trigg, raised nearly £4000 for Child Action Lanka. The violin soloist, who played Bruch’s First Violin Concerto, was also a Lydian: Jonny Hayward.

03/03/19 - Congratulations to cellist Felix Rosenboom, winner of this year's Sevenoaks Young Musician of the Year competition. We hope Felix will join us to play Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations in our December concert. - Watch this space for details.

12/04/18 - We did it!  Against all odds - particularly looming GCSE and A-levels - we got together a great orchestra for our Spring Concert.  There were huge musical challenges, particularly in the Finzi, but in true Lydian style our young musicians worked their socks off and produced a fantastic concert at the end of their course.  So proud of you all.  Thank you Alec and Nelson.

12/02/18 - Head to Tonbridge Parish Church on 7th April for our Spring concert.  An 'all-Lydian' line-up, with ex-Lydian horn player (1999-2002) Alec Frank-Gemmill at the helm and recent principal clarinettist, Nelson Sinclair-Strong, as soloist in the Finzi Clarinet Concerto.

22/12/17 - A stunning performance by Peter Xie (2017 Sevenoaks Young Musician of the year) of Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto at our Winter Concert at the Pamoja Hall. This and excerpts from the Nutcracker put everyone in a festive mood.  Great audience too!  Thanks to Peter Young for conducting.

30/07/17 - What a wonderful tour in the Loire valley and an inspired concert back home at the Pamoja Hall.  Thank you Bryn, Beth and all the orchestra for making it so special, not to mention all the committee members who worked so hard to make it happen.

14/07/17 - Rehearsals start tonight for our tour to France - 4 concerts in wonderful venues from 23-27 July.  We finish with our summer concert at the Pamoja Hall, Sevenoaks on Saturday 29th July 7.30pm.  If you can't get to the Loire, come to Sevenoaks!

12/06/17 - Notice is hereby given of our AGM to be held on Tuesday 18th July at 19.15 at Christ Church URC, TN13 2JG

12/06/17 - The final LTO course for this academic year has just taken place.  Such hard work from our tutors, Pippa, Rachel, Fraser and Maddy, not to mention the children who worked their socks off to perform a challenging programme at their end of course concert. Thanks too to our two Lydian helpers - James and Alex.

17/04/17 - We had a wonderful concert two weeks ago with Christoph Nielbock, director of the Wiesbaden Music Academy.  It was a delight to have him back conducting the Lydian and he was really impressed with the way the orchestra responded over the few days he was here.  We are trying to find a way of collaborating again in the next couple of years.

05/01/17 - Happy New Year!   We had a very successful Winter Concert a couple of days before Christmas, with a sparkling performance of Beethoven's 3rd Piano Concerto by Robert Cheung, winner of the2016  Sevenoaks Young Musician of the Year competition.  Michael Hitchcock conducted and treated us all to the rarely-performed Third Symphony by Max Bruch.

05/12/16 - DVDs of the 40th Anniversary Concert have arrived!  A wonderful record of a fabulous day of music-making.  Thanks go to Alison Gent for all  her hard work in making this happen.  If you didn't order a copy at the time of the concert, DVDs can be bought at the concert on 22nd December or by emailing chairman@lydian.org.uk

23/11/16Tour letters - have now gone out and are available to download from the website and the players Facebook group.  Deposit deadline is 19th December.

16/11/16 - Congratulations to violinist, Conor Woodbridge, who recently gained a place in the intermediate National Youth Strings Orchestra.

28/10/16 -  Exciting times - plans for our tour to France in July 2017 are nearing completion.  Wonderful venues including Poitiers and Orleans cathedrals and two chateaux in the Loire.  See our tours page for more info.

26/10/16 -  Sponsors - we are delighted to announce that Mortgages for Business will be supporting Lydian for another year.

20/10/16 - Guest conductor from Germany - Christoph Nielbock from the Wiesbaden Musikschule is coming back to conduct Lydian for the Spring course and concert.   The concert will be at St. Stephen's Church, Tonbridge on Monday 3rd April.

17/10/16 - LTO - the first course of this academic year took place just before half term.  The children worked so hard our tutors had to find more music to challenge them on Sunday morning!  The next courses are at the end of February and mid-June 2017.  See the LTO page for more info.

21/08/16 - Basset Clarinet - a masterclass in liquid tones produced by Katherine Lacy, principal clarinet of the RPO, who started off our soloists workshop day in August with the Mozart concerto.  Followed by James Drake (clarinet), Sophie Westbrooke (recorder), Alex Trigg (keyboard) each performing part of a concert with the orchestra.  The evening was spent socialising, combining Scottish dancing, 'fluffy bunnies' and a quiz with a light supper.  Thanks Pippa!

19/07/16 - 40th Anniversary Concert - What an amazing day!  75 musicians (including a handful of ex-Lydians) performing our most ambitious programme to date.  It was a great pleasure to welcome back Nils Schweckendiek to conduct Rimsky Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol, Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra and Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony.  A professional DVD was made of the concert - and we hope to have some clips on the website soon.  We gave our thanks to Anthony Daniel, who stood down as chairman after 14 years, and a fond farewell to Helga Merrick - a Lydian 'institution' !
