The premier independent youth orchestra in the South East.
The Lydian Orchestra has been making music since 1976 and over the past few years has grown in size and stature, delivering fantastic performance and musical training opportunities to a wide range of young musicians from Kent, Sussex and Surrey.
Now 42years old, it celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2016 with a superb concert at the Pamoja Hall at Sevenoaks School. This was conducted by former Lydian cellist Nils Schweckendiek with its most ambitious programme yet: Rimsky Korsakov Capriccio Espagnol, Britten Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra and Shostakovich Symphony No.5.
Meeting three times a year for an intensive week's course and concert - Winter, Spring and Summer - the main orchestra welcomes applications from those at the Grade 7/8 level and above and aged 13-23. There are no auditions. For those who haven't yet reached that standard and who therefore might find the repertoire somewhat challenging, why not join us for a course with the Lydian Training Orchestra which meets for three short weekends a year during term-time?
The Orchestra aims to go on a foreign tour every two years and holds a concerto workshop day in intervening years. The next tour is being planned for 25 July - 3 August 2019. For more information, please contact email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org
The Summer Concert takes place at the Pamoja Hall at Sevenoaks School on Sunday 15th July 2018, at 18.30. We are delighted to feature tenor Davide Sorrentino in a feast of Italian opera arias in the first half, followed by Bruckner's Fourth Symphony. A summer's evening not to be missed! Please put the date in your diary now. More information will follow shortly.
The Concerto Workshop takes place this year on Saturday 18th August at the Plaza Suite, Stage Theatre, Sevenoaks. This is an in-house workshop where we invite players from within the orchestra to apply to play a concerto movement or sing or conduct with their friends in Lydian accompanying them. We can take up to about 8 soloists, so if you wish to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity, please contact the Music Adviser, Brynly Clarke, for more information. The day's music-making is normally followed by a social event in the evening for all the family.
The Winter Concert will take place at the Pamoja Hall, Sevenoaks School on Friday 21st December 2018. The concert will feature the winner of the 2018 Sevenoaks Young Musician of the Year Competition, Jonathan Ma, who will perform the Nielsen Flute Concerto and will be conducted by Michael Hitchcock.
