LTO Summer Course

The final LTO course for this academic year has just taken place. Such hard work from our tutors, Pippa, Rachel, Fraser and Maddy, not to mention the children who worked their socks off to perform a challenging programme at their end of course concert. Thanks too to our two Lydian helpers - James and Alex.

Spring Concert

We had a wonderful concert two weeks ago with Christoph Nielbock, director of the Wiesbaden Music Academy. It was a delight to have him back conducting the Lydian and he was really impressed with the way the orchestra responded over the few days he was here. We are trying to find a way of collaborating again in the next couple of years.

Happy New Year!

We had a very successful Winter Concert a couple of days before Christmas, with a sparkling performance of Beethoven's 3rd Piano Concerto by Robert Cheung, winner of the2016 Sevenoaks Young Musician of the Year competition. Michael Hitchcock conducted and treated us all to the rarely-performed Third Symphony by Max Bruch.

Basset Clarinet

A masterclass in liquid tones produced by Katherine Lacy, principal clarinet of the RPO, who started off our soloists workshop day in August with the Mozart concerto. Followed by James Drake (clarinet), Sophie Westbrooke (recorder), Alex Trigg (keyboard) each performing part of a concert with the orchestra. The evening was spent socialising, combining Scottish dancing, 'fluffy bunnies' and a quiz with a light supper. Thanks Pippa!

40th Anniversary Concert

What an amazing day! 75 musicians (including a handful of ex-Lydians) performing our most ambitious programme to date. It was a great pleasure to welcome back Nils Schweckendiek to conduct Rimsky Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol, Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra and Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony. A professional DVD was made of the concert - and we hope to have some clips on the website soon. We gave our thanks to Anthony Daniel, who stood down as chairman after 14 years, and a fond farewell to Helga Merrick - a Lydian 'institution' !
